We at Greater Manchester Police are committed to supporting homeless people and tackling issues experienced by people in the local community.
Regularly speaking to the homeless members of our community, engaging with them, and understanding their situation is a key part of this. Working with our partners from the council and local charities, we ensure they have opportunities to receive support with accommodation, finances, and their mental health.
However, we also take positive and decisive action to challenge any behaviour which becomes criminal, such as aggressive begging or anti-social behaviour. The new Respect Orders have been key in warning individuals when their behaviour is negatively affecting other members of the community. When enforcement is necessary, arrests are made and prosecutions are pursued.
PC Mbewe and other neighbourhood officers, alongside Police Community Support Officers have been working closely with the Manchester City Council at the Velodrome, Asda and the surrounding areas to ensure that these issues are tackled with a balanced approach. Targeting the root causes of homelessness, whilst discouraging and punishing criminality ensures actions taken are empathetic, lawful, and effective.
If you're concerned about someone who may be sleeping on the street, please report it to us, so that the appropriate support/enforcement response can be put in place.
Together, we can make a real difference.
